The QUAD 3CDT is a high-precision CD transport designed as the natural partner for the QUAD 3 integrated amplifier. Featuring a dedicated disc mechanism, advanced servo architecture, an ultra-low-jitter TCXO clock and coaxial and optical digital outputs, it is engineered to extract the digital signal from CDs with maximum precision and minimal interference.
The QUAD 3CDT is a dedicated CD transport designed to extract digital information from discs with maximum precision before sending it to an external DAC. Developed as the natural partner for the QUAD 3 integrated amplifier, it combines a high-precision disc mechanism, sophisticated servo architecture and an ultra-low-jitter TCXO clock.
Unlike a conventional CD player, the 3CDT does not incorporate digital-to-analogue conversion. Its engineering is focused on one specific task: accurately reading the data from the disc and delivering a clean, stable SPDIF digital signal through its coaxial and optical outputs.
Separating the transport from digital-to-analogue conversion reduces unnecessary circuitry inside the unit and allows the design to concentrate entirely on digital reading accuracy.
The QUAD 3CDT can therefore be partnered with the DAC built into the QUAD 3 or with any compatible external DAC, amplifier or preamplifier equipped with a digital input.
This architecture follows QUAD's long-standing philosophy of pursuing the closest possible approach to the original sound.
At the heart of the QUAD 3CDT is a high-precision CD mechanism supported by a servo control system specifically developed for this application.
The laser assembly and servo operation have been optimised to minimise read errors, instability and jitter, helping to preserve the integrity of the information stored on the disc.
The mechanism is also designed for quiet and stable operation, reducing the influence of vibration during playback.
QUAD has redesigned the internal power architecture to separate the critical circuits involved in disc reading.
The circuits responsible for the motor and laser servo are isolated from the decoding section that recovers the digital audio information.
This separation helps prevent electrical noise generated by the mechanical operation from interfering with the digital circuitry responsible for forming the output signal.
One of the key elements of the QUAD 3CDT is its Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO).
This ultra-low-jitter clock acts as the main timing reference for the servo and decoding section, helping to generate a more stable SPDIF digital signal.
The TCXO circuit uses its own low-noise power supply and independent grounding arrangement, further reducing the possibility of electrical interference affecting signal timing accuracy.
The CD servo system uses three independent low-noise voltage regulator circuits, providing stable power to the different areas responsible for reading the disc.
The TCXO clock circuit additionally benefits from its own dedicated ultra-low-noise linear regulator.
This power supply architecture is designed to reduce power-induced jitter and provide stable electrical conditions for the most sensitive digital circuitry.
The servo and control architecture uses a dual-core processing system comprising a high-performance 32-bit RISC processor and a dedicated MCU.
This configuration provides precise management of the servo, disc access and error-correction processes required for stable and consistent playback.
Although it can be used with any compatible DAC or amplifier equipped with a digital input, the QUAD 3CDT has been specifically developed to complement the QUAD 3.
In this combination, the 3CDT is dedicated exclusively to reading and recovering the data from the CD, while the sophisticated ESS9038Q2M DAC inside the QUAD 3 performs digital-to-analogue conversion.
Separating these two functions allows each component to perform the task for which it was specifically designed while creating a visually coherent Hi-Fi system.
The QUAD 3CDT provides two digital connection options: coaxial and optical SPDIF.
The coaxial output has a 75-ohm impedance and provides a direct connection to compatible DACs, integrated amplifiers and digital preamplifiers.
The optical output provides an alternative connection with electrical isolation between the transport and the conversion equipment.
In addition to conventional audio CDs, the QUAD 3CDT is compatible with CD-R and CD-RW discs, increasing playback flexibility.
The unit can also reproduce compatible data discs containing audio files in several digital formats.
In addition to conventional CD playback, the 3CDT supports music files in FLAC, WAV, WMA, MP3 and APE formats recorded on compatible discs.
This capability provides additional versatility for listeners who maintain digital music collections archived on optical media.
The QUAD 3CDT shares the visual language of the QUAD 3 integrated amplifier, combining compact dimensions with styling elements inspired by the British manufacturer's long history.
The front panel uses the same elegant proportions and has been designed to allow both components to form a visually coherent system.
Internally, the transport mechanism is protected against vibration and electrical interference, while the chassis has been engineered to provide mechanical stability during disc playback.
The front panel incorporates an illuminated LCD display that clearly presents the main information relating to playback.
The supplied remote control provides convenient access to the main transport functions from the listening position.
For listeners who maintain a CD collection and want to continue enjoying it within a modern Hi-Fi system, a dedicated transport makes it possible to take advantage of the high-quality DACs now incorporated into amplifiers and digital components.
The QUAD 3CDT focuses its engineering precisely on this task: stable disc reading, effective error control and delivery of a high-integrity, low-jitter digital signal to the DAC.
With its dedicated mechanism, TCXO clock, low-noise power regulation and coaxial and optical outputs, the QUAD 3CDT is the natural companion for the QUAD 3 and a versatile solution for any Hi-Fi system based around an external DAC.
