DALI SUB P 10DSS has set the goal of setting new standards for compact, high-performance subwoofers for music and movies. In order to achieve this goal, Dali uses high-quality technology: a 500-watt short-range, maximum power handling and 3 x 10-inch long-range Class D amplifier (1 active, 2 passive) with a very rigid and lightweight diaphragm, dual spiders, and low-loss suspension. Together with the massive magnetic systems you therefore get the highest performance available. Everything is wrapped in an elegant design, which unites aesthetic and technical reasons on a solid foundation. The P-10 DSS subwoofer is available in a glossy black or white finish, has a remote control included and a 2-year Dali warranty, although Sound Pixel Planet in Spain extends it to 3 years.

In detail

Dali does not lose any detail in the design and construction quality, focused on excellence in the reproduction of soundtracks and music. It is extremely important to Dali that a subwoofer is able to reproduce the input signal authentically and not artificially fatten it. Furthermore, Dali wants to avoid at all costs a lack of low frequencies that are compensated with high volume.

The ultra-solid MDF enclosure finished in glossy lacquer easily meets the house's strict specifications for minimum vibration and maximum rigidity. The dimensions of “only” 370 x 340 x 340 mm (WxHxD) make it externally compact, and yet it obtains extreme resolution in bass and signal peaks, offering a maximum level of satisfaction. It is available in two versions – high gloss black and white. Both consist of 10 layers of high quality paint. A deep observation, without reservations in the paint and in the way of treating the material, demonstrates a very high quality manufacturing, with a hand polishing of each layer as well.

Lateral passive membrane

For Dali's goals – the highest possible sound pressure level, combined with the lowest possible distortion in a compact package – even a pressure chamber design of a bass-reflex cabinet would not offer a perfect result. Instead, they mount the subwoofer with two side-mounted passive radiators. These can be tuned in order to achieve further frequency reduction. The advantage of this design is that the noises, which are currently at high levels in the ventilation system, do not occur.

Dali SUB P-10 is equipped with a 10-inch DSS active driver that radiates downward. The membrane is based on a sandwich structure with carbon fiber paper on the front and back. The geometry and material applied does not require a dust cap. This results in a rigid cone with better characteristics, light weight, characterized by agile transients. The four-layer voice coil is mounted in an aluminum body. In order to reduce possible resonances, the inner workings of the body are connected to a thin piece of paper. The diameter of the voice coil is 63.5 mm and ensures maximum durability. A large 2-part ferrite magnet with a magnetic core ensures that the voice coil is safe, even if “the going gets tough” and a strong deflection is necessary. In order to achieve optimal diaphragm control, the speaker has two dual spiders, 12mm apart. In this way, the voice coil maintains 100% purity in the piston behavior, even at a very high sound pressure level. Linearity in the elaborate construction is ensured by the entire 25-mm diaphragm. The lines are oversized, solid, silver-clad, 99.999% pure oxygen-free copper for optimal signal quality. The chassis is made of aluminum in order to avoid all magnetic loss.

The two side-mounted woofers share a large part of the technology with the active pilot. The cone geometry is the same as the downfiring active woofer cone and the material is made of carbon fiber. The upper part of the chassis is the same thing – 10 legs and an identical suspension, but behind it only with a cross brace, and of course there is no voice coil or a magnetic system. The main purpose of the passive radiator is to follow the movements of the active subwoofer. Therefore, it seems easier than it is to coordinate the active and passive subwoofer with radiator and all with an acoustic balance. Embedded in the cone of the passive radiator is a precisely balanced amount of zinc alloy, in order to obtain the desired weight. Only with the correct weight and correct weight distribution can the desirable membrane displacement criteria be achieved. A zinc alloy was chosen due to its density, and non-magnetic properties.

Automatic Management

The powerful class D amplifier capacity delivers 300 watts continuous operation (RMS) and works with great precision and immense space. The subwoofer is capable of providing 500 watts of maximum power in the short term. This can happen, for example, with a big explosion in an action movie, or the sudden use of orchestral music on the Blu-ray even at high volumes. The switching power supply, typical of a digital amplifier, provides low power consumption and impeccable efficiency. Due to minimal low heat loss, there is no heat sink, which is mandatory for analog amplifiers. The built-in limiter compares the input signal amplitude with a possible signal output level. If this circuit reveals a potential problem, the limiter will gently clip the signal – elegantly avoiding clipping.

The subwoofer has to match a corresponding remote control, which allows you to choose the frequency phase, volume and crossover. The Mute and Interval button can also be conveniently controlled from a distance. The P-10 DSS allows the user to choose between movie and music mode with the remote control. For realistic and robust transmission of such and explosions in a movie, the sound should be in “Cinema” mode, while the lower frequencies are amplified to experience the most realistic cinema experience possible. To achieve a neutral and therefore linear performance, the sound mode can be in high fidelity, which ensures the exact transmission of all the details of the music, while the integration between the front speakers is optimized. There are three user memory buttons (program volume, phase, set crossover frequency).
