DALI OBERON is the range of speakers intermediate between Zensor and Opticon.

DALI innovations such as large soft dome tweeters, SMC magnetic systems and DALI manufactured drivers have been available for many years in their high-end speaker ranges. But now, they are at a point where they can provide this high-end DALI technology to more affordable speaker series, also giving the listening experience a new image.

With the DALI OBERON series, the Danes have chosen the best elements from their entire catalog and have united them in a range that offers unprecedented audio quality, aesthetics and versatility. This series has a speaker for every room and situation, from the small and compact OBERON 1, OBERON VOKAL and OBERON ON-WALL to the large OBERON 7 tower. Without forgetting the large OBERON 3 monitor and the compact OBERON 5 tower.

Constructed from a solid MDF shell, the DALI OBERON range is available in four finishes: Black Ash, White, Dark Walnut and Light Oak. The matte black or white front baffle frames the large, ultra-lightweight 29mm soft dome tweeter and the SMC woofers, with a new optimized wood fiber structure cone. The rear bass port ensures optimal integration into the room, and the sleek aluminum base gives the towers a lighter image. The OBERON ON-WALL model offers a thin-wall solution using DALI's exclusive on-wall bass port system.

OBERON also includes a completely new front grill design. The new rounded grills add a more visual and contemporary aesthetic to the range. Mountain Gray is the standard grill finish for light finishes, and Shadow Black is the standard grill finish for dark finishes. They are also available, upon request, in Marshmallow White and Traditional Black tones.

CASING

The OBERON range has a casing of machined MDF panels finished in high quality vinyl. The structure of internal beams provides solidity, reducing internal resonances almost entirely.  The interior of the enclosure is lined with shock-absorbing insulation on all sides except the front baffle to achieve more direct contact between the woofer and rear port for more accurate bass and improved midrange attack.

With a bass reflex design, the bass ports are on the rear in most models allowing the walls to be used to enhance the bass. In the OBERON VOKAL model the port is on the front speaker so it can be placed on a TV cabinet, and ON-WALL with a Down-fired port that uses the wall on which it is placed to emit surprising bass for such a compact and thin case.

The front fable has an exclusive matte finish, complementing the dark aluminum details. The rounded front grill is made of an acoustically transparent fabric that complements the aesthetics of the OBERON speaker. High quality DALI terminals ensure maximum fit with both bare and banana speaker cables.

WIDE DISPERSION

DALI allows speakers to be easily integrated into any room. Both the driver materials and the geometry applied to the design of the OBERON range have been selected to achieve a wide dispersion pattern in the listening area. The same principles that have been applied in the design of the crossover.

Therefore, the user experiences a well-integrated sound even when listening significantly off-axis. This is important because the user rarely sits directly in front of the speakers when listening to music.

An added benefit is a notable reduction in harmonic distortion and diffractions that affect frequency distortion, since these will always be stronger in an on-axis response. This is also why all DALI speakers are not designed to require decoupling tips.

WOOFER

Like all DALI drivers dedicated to reproducing the delicate midrange and bass area, the OBERON woofer includes a wood fiber cone. This blend of fine-grained paper pulp reinforced with wood fibers creates a rigid, lightweight, well-performing structure. Combined with low-loss damping and spider suspension, the cone reproduces the micro details of the signal without filters and with great precision.

The membrane area of ​​the larger OBERON series drivers have sizes larger than most standards on the market. The Oberon 3 and 7's 7" woofer is approximately 15% larger when compared to the usual 6 ½" size. Greater cone area allows for the same level of sound pressure generated with better voice coil excursion. It also allows for a higher sound pressure level and, most importantly, achieves smooth reproduction of music dynamics.

The membrane ends in a rubber cushioning chosen for its flexible and soft properties. Thus the membrane can move freely with a very low damping effect and allows the magnetic motor to control the movement of the membrane.

The OBERON voice coil is four-layer, and while a 4-layer coil is effective in dealing with brute force, the greater magnitude of moving mass often poses a problem for mid-range reproduction, unmatching the voice from the playback. The DALI solution to minimize weight was to apply a lightweight copper-clad aluminum cable. This expensive solution joins an aluminum core with a thin outer copper tube. Combining the high conductivity/weight ratio of aluminum (205% the value of copper) with the properties of greater contact resistance and better mechanical strength of copper, DALI has achieved a lightweight, high-conductivity voice coil, capable of handling high-level signals. The result is a drastic improvement in bass control, well-controlled reproduction of micro details and the lightest two-capable voice coil that adds the midrange needed to match DALI OBERON reproduction.

The magnetic motor features a large ferrite magnet surrounding a polarized piece made from a unique combination of iron and SMC. By allowing the iron magnet to form the base of the magnet, the negative effects of the material are minimized, and by crowning the magnetic piece located in the center of the voice coil's area of ​​influence with the 10mm SMC disc. This location ensures maximum effect of the SMC in the voice coil environment, achieving an improved constant flux field. The use of the SMC disc also significantly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents. These combined engine system improvements result in a decrease in third-order distortion. This allows the OBERON series to present longer listening pleasure, a relaxed midrange and surprising quality of detail for its class.

TWEETER

The new ultra-light 29mm soft dome tweeter has been developed specifically for the OBERON series. Leveraging solutions used in other DALI tweeters, this unit is both truly new and packed with proven DALI technologies.

The 29mm oversize membrane has been made with an ultra-light fabric. Compared to most soft dome tweeters on the market, the DALI dome material weighs less than half: 0.060 mg per mm2.

The large size of the membrane allows the twitter to generate higher levels of pressure with less excursion, keeping the movement of the voice coil to a precise minimum. For further improvement in supported power, to reduce power compression and to manage linear extrusion of the voice coil, the tweeter magnetic system incorporates ferro-fluid cooling. For long-term stability in a saturated cell, a high quality one (220 gauss type) is used.

Covering the top of the polarizing piece is a soft plush cushion. This material eliminates unwanted reflections that can occur in a traditional smooth finished piece, applied in the construction of simpler tweeters.

The ultra-light soft dome tweeter manufactured by DALI is also optimized for greater bandwidth in its lower frequency area. This ensures optimal delivery of the midrange woofer to the tweeter, creating a balanced, pressure-free and highly coherent upper midrange.

The tweeter faceplate next to the dome has been designed with a geometry similar to OPTICON and RUBICON tweeters to create optimal working conditions for the soft dome. The intention is to combine an extended frequency response with wide dispersion and low coloration.
