Created as a tribute to the headphones developed by Joseph Grado in the early 1990s (the Grado HP1), this Special Edition is designed with an eye on the present and future of the brand, gathering various elements that will guide the next releases from the New York-based company.
At the heart of the Grado HP100 SE is an entirely new driver. Taking into account the qualities of a 52mm driver, Grado’s goal was to deliver a driver with excellent high-frequency resolution, smooth midrange, and powerful bass with low distortion, resulting in a sound that is correct both harmonically and musically.
A new paper composite cone was chosen, combined with a high magnetic flux circuit that uses rare alloys, while the new voice coil is made of lightweight copper-plated aluminum. This new magnetic circuit, together with the voice coil, delivers excellent dynamics and transient response, as well as a refined sense of space, soundstage, and imaging.
Paying homage to the recognizable heritage of the original HP1/2/3 headphones but with a contemporary touch, the housings are individually machined from specially treated aluminum, with the model name sharply engraved on the front.
The Grado HP100 SE is the first model from the New York brand to feature detachable cables. A change from the cable used until now in the Statement Series models, it now features a more durable and softer braided finish, with insulation that improves flexibility and reduces cable weight. Finished with a 6.3 mm jack, it connects to the cups via a 4-pin mini XLR connector.
The company also states that, in the future, they plan to offer other cable options, such as 4-pin XLR, 4.4mm balanced ends, and various lengths. This way, users can change the cable based on their needs.
The HP100 SE debuts a new headband, another change compared to previous Grado models. Designed for comfort during long listening sessions, the new headband increases padding by 50% compared to the previous model, featuring a stainless steel band and height adjustment rods for a perfect fit to minimize listening fatigue.
The gimbal stabilizers are made from aluminum alloy, while the steel height rods improve stability. Thus, the cups can rotate 105 degrees, reducing wear.
